NEW YORK: Mexico will be guest of honor of the Global Markets Forum at BookExpo America 2013, which will be held June 3–6 at the Javits Center in Manhattan.
The special invitation was issued on the final day of BEA 2012, June 7, after a meeting between the Mexican literary establishment, the institution Proméxico of New York and the organizing committee of BEA, with librarians, booksellers, publishers and other industry professionals in attendance.
The country with the largest Spanish-speaking population in the world — estimated at more than 110 million — will take this opportunity to continue promoting Mexican culture in the United States. Though only 2% of Mexico’s population are habitual readers (meaning they read six books per year or more), Mexico is seen as the next booming book market in this language by many American publishers and e-tailers.
Mexico at large and the Guadalajara Book Fair are doing a great job strengthening the trade, as well as the cultural and social links the country already has with the US. The recent book fair Léala, in Los Angeles is just one example of this mutual interest.
