In New York City, people were already lining up by 9 pm to buy the new iPhone 4 at the Apple Store in Soho. The line stretched around the block, and people had set up chairs, tents, food and drinks to sustain them through the night. Pre-orders have already begun, but the device goes on sale at 7:00 am Thursday morning in stores around the country. In the photo, New Yorkers have set up camp for the night outside the Apple store to be among the first to buy the iPhone 4.

The New York Times’ David Pogue reviewed the new operating system for the iPhone today, predicting that the competition is in for a tough fight. Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal came to a similar conclusion, but noted that one of the biggest drawbacks is the exclusive contract that Apple has with AT&T. Customers have continuously complained about AT&T’s less than fantastic coverage, especially on the east coast of the USA.
