Brazil’s National Book Publishers Association (SNEL), in partnership with NielsenIQ BookData, has released the Guia de Editoras, the country’s first comprehensive guide mapping its publishing sector. The study identifies 1,047 active publishers and offers new insights into the industry’s geographic distribution, publishing segments, and economic impact.

According to Dante Cid, president of SNEL, the guide is intended to strengthen the industry’s knowledge base and support decision-making. “It is a strategic tool that enriches public debate, informs policymaking, and strengthens the sector’s ability to coordinate and advocate for its interests,” he said.

The study maps Brazil’s publishing market operating across four sectors: Trade publishing (64%), Professional, Scientific and Technical publishing (18%), Religious publishing (12%), and Educational publishing (6%).

Most publishers, 77%, are concentrated in Brazil’s Southeast region, which includes the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo. The South region ranks second, accounting for 13% of the country’s publishers.

The Southeast also dominates the market economically, accounting for 97% of total publisher revenue, or approximately R$7.2 billion.

The guide also includes data on foreign publishers that do not produce books locally but maintain commercial operations in Brazil to distribute print and digital titles. According to the study, these companies generated an estimated R$340 million in revenue in 2025 ($66.75 million).

While the existence of more than 1,000 publishers may seem surprising in a country where reading rates remain a challenge, SNEL vice president Marcos da Veiga Pereira emphasized the strength of the Brazilian publishing sector.

“An analysis of the various studies on the Brazilian publishing market shows that we are one of the most relevant publishing industries in Latin America, with more than 1,000 active publishers and more than 10,000 new titles published each year,” he said.

While previous studies have measured what the industry produces, sells, and how Brazilians read, the Publishers Guide focuses on the structure of the sector itself. In doing so, it offers one of the clearest portraits to date of the country’s publishing landscape.

The guide complements a broader ecosystem of research that helps map Brazil’s publishing industry. These include NielsenIQ BookData’s Brazilian Publishing Industry Sales and Production Report and Book Retail Panel, alongside independent studies such as the Book Consumption Survey and Retratos da Leitura no Brasil (Portraits of Reading in Brazil).

  1. It would be interesting to know if Brazil has publishers who print on demand. We are witnessing the growth of Amazon KDP and BOD (in Germany) and other examples, but is there a market leader for POD publishers, not just in Brazil but in South America?
