A ‘Male’ and ‘Female’ Category Eliminated
The annual Audie Awards from the Audio Publishers Association have today issued their 2024 shortlist of finalists, this year growing again to 27 categories. That keeps them in that trio of most heavily categorized book and publishing prize programs, the other two contests of such heaving weight being the British Book Awards and the PROSE awards in the academic arena.

This year with its March 4 announcement ceremony set for Los Angeles (the first time since 2008 that the show will be in California), the program’s media messaging is dropping plenty of entertainment names, a way that marketers, of course, have been working for several years to raise the celebrity-coattails profile of audiobooks by parading their best-known readers to gain the attention of consumers. Without the visual appeal or extraordinary reach of film and television, audio’s battle for buzz can be tougher.

In a reflection of the current interest in diversity, equality, and inclusion, the program has changed the names of two categories. The Best Male Narrator and Best Female Narrator categories have become Best Fiction Narrator and Best Nonfiction Narrator.

Sean McManus

Sean McManus, who is the president both of Dreamscape and of the Audio Publishers Association, is quoted with today’s release of the finalists in this year’s competition, saying that the organization is “proud to announce category reforms and recognitions that reflect the rich tapestry of the world of audio and literary entertainment.”

Narration is not changing, apparently, being the industry’s favorite term for the work of the performer in voicing an audiobook, although narration means, per Merriam-Webster, “the act or process of telling the particulars of an act, occurrence, or course of events.” Those who voice audiobooks—some with profoundly good effect, of course—actually are readers. They read the texts in question rather than telling you about them, which is closer to the work of a narrator.

One way that the Audies are like most book and publishing prize programs is that they still don’t provide the news media with insights into how their accolades move the audiobook sales needle (or don’t). It would be helpful to know how much these honors for so much fine audiobook production can mean in the marketplace.

In the United Kingdom, the industry has benefited from seeing the Booker Prize Foundation, the Baillie Gifford Prize, and the British Academy Book Prize for Global Cultural Understanding share information about what effects its awards have on sales, and this is very helpful to the world publishing industry in assessing the actual value of so many accolades and their accompanying seals of approval and “golden stickers” for winning products.

It would be just as good to see the Audies consider following up after a period of some weeks following the awards event, and offering what sales energy can be discerned in the marketplace for products awarded. How much does an Audie win do for an audiobook?

In a way, of course, this is what’s behind the announcement of a new “APA Choice” recognition, described by the Audies’ organizers as honoring “audiobooks that not only captivated listeners but also became cultural phenomena.” The phenomenon in question, of course, is most easily measured by sales. Chosen this year for their “phenomenal” status are Fourth Wing, Never Finished, Spare, The Covenant of Water, and The Woman in Me. It would be doubly informative for the industry to learn just what impact on sales the attention of the Audies produces for these big titles.
