Awards: The Audie Awards’ 2022 Finalists: 25 Categories

In Feature Articles by Porter Anderson

The 27th annual Audie Awards program from the Audio Publishers Association features more than 120 finalists.

Digital Awards Ceremony: March 4
As the new year’s publishing and book award press notices continue to pour in, today’s key announcement (February 3) is from the Audio Publishers Association‘s annual Audie Awards, which plan a winners’ program on March 4 at 9 p.m. ET / 14:00 GMT. Once again, prevailing and evolving conditions in the still-ongoing coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic have prompted organizers to create the awards event as a digital one.

That event is to be hosted by former White House public engagement officer Kal Penn, and you can learn more about it here.

The Audies, not unlike the PROSE Awards, are among the biggest annual prize programs in publishing and books, in that they encompass 25 catetories, each with multiple finalists.

Michele Cobb

While journalists appreciate the work of the Audio Publishers Association for its research and data reports on the market under executive director Michele Cobb‘s leadership, the Audies are easily the bigger consumer-facing element of the association’s work: glam is a draw.

Based in the United States, but working a bit in international channels—there’s a Spanish-language category—the range and multicultural diversity of this program shows “room for improvement,” as Elsevier’s Michiel Kolman would say. Audiobooks are growing in many parts of the world (just ask Storytel’s Jonas Tellander), and the Audio Publishers Association does not limit itself to American operations or content, at least in its public descriptions of itself, which is admirable and realistic in such a globalized industry.

Certainly the internationalist stance from which Publishing Perspectives operates would respectfully recommend that the association consider doing more to survey and incorporate non-English and non-US audio publication.

It might also be proposed that political books could be given a category of their own. Newly energized in our era of freakishly divisive politics, the political sub-set of nonfiction contains enormous consumer energy and commitment, and its books are traditionally—and sometimes quite skillfully—narrated by their authors. The UK’s Parliamentary Book Awards shortlists, specialized in political writings, are a fine place to start for candidates.

The association does a great job of watching carefully the popular data of sales in audiobooks and at times releases helpful and informative research on the market and its consumers.

In the most recent StatShot report from the Association of American Publishers (AAP), downloaded audiobook sales in the United States in 2021 were seen to have risen 13.4 percent, to US$766.2 million for the year. After close to 10 years of strong gains, the robust reception of downloaded and streaming audio has been welcomed by many in the industry, and that’s understandable.

It’s also good for context to remember that audiobooks account for a relatively small part of the US market, at 8.9 percent in December, for example. Nevertheless, there have been promising signs in the American market and other international regions that audiobooks may be a more popular approach to fiction and nonfiction for men and boys, helping to attract a consumer segment not always easily enticed by traditional reading.

Ana Maria Allessi

In a prepared statement on the release this morning of the finalists, Audio Publishers Association president Ana Maria Allessi is quoted, saying that those finalists “are a reflection of the continuous growth and popularity of the medium. There’s truly something for everyone.”

That’s hard to argue with, when by our count there are at least 126 finalist-audiobooks here. We can’t guarantee the accuracy of that count, which was made while processing the text of the list.

Certainly the sheer size of the overall list—which has arrived on 18 pages—vouches for the Audio Publishers Association’s commitment to a thorough vetting of the market’s year in audio, albeit primarily in American offerings.

Another thing that’s probably more easily seen in a listing of this kind than may be recognizable “on the ground” in individual audiobook purchases is trends in narration structure.

This year’s finalists’ list, for example, is easily dominated by single-narrator performances, and book industry purists might argue that this is closer to the author-to-reader intimacy of traditional long-form reading. There are exceptions, however, and in the category that actually specifies multi-voiced production, you’ll see some of the “cast of thousands” treatment that remains popular with some listeners.

Audie Awards 2022 Finalists

In our listings of this large group of more than 120 finalists, we’ve chosen at random an image from an audiobook’s cover design for each of the 25 categories. The choice of that cover artwork doesn’t represent anyone’s preference among finalists or a prediction of a winner.
