GUADALAJARA – Spanish publisher Santillana used the Guadalajara International Book Fair to launch its new children’s and YA imprint Loqueleo, which will sell books in the 22 countries in which the company has a presence.
The concept behind the imprint is ‘we are what we read,’ and launches with around 300 titles targeted at specific age groups, growing the catalog to reach 100 million pupils in Spain and Latin America with both print and e-book editions.
“Loqueleo (what I read) is a young and dynamic brand that represents the evolution of a great publisher through the experience and tradition that exist in Santillana, and of which the best authors and illustrators form part to bring new reading experiences,” Juan Arzoz, Santillana Mexico’s director general, said during the launch event at the FIL.
The new imprint currently offering a catalog for Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay, as well as support resources for teachers and parents.
“Times change, new ways of reading have emerged, new reading formats, and new ways of readers interacting with each other. Santillana acknowledges this change and evolves with Loqueleo,” the new imprint’s director Raúl González said in Guadalajara.
The catalog includes authors from Spain and across Latin America, such as Argentina’s Luis Pescetti, Yolanda Reyes of Colombia and Mexican Francisco Hinojosa, who were also present at the launch event at the FIL.
As well as local authors from each market, the imprint includes classics in translation by authors such as Hans Christian Andersen and Roald Dahl.
Santillana is part of Madrid-based media and education conglomerate Grupo Prisa, owner of, among other brands, El País newspaper and the Cadena SER and Caracol radio stations, in Spain and Colombia respectively.
Santillana’s trade imprints were acquired by Penguin Random House in March 2014.
