“The Markets will be the UN for Publishing,” A Chat with Holger Volland

Last week, Publishing Perspectives hosted a Twitter chat with Holger Volland, VP of Conferences and Creative Industries at the Frankfurt Book Fair, to learn more about the upcoming conference, The Markets: Global Publishing Summit, taking place on October 13th in Frankfurt.

The Markets: Global Publishing Summit will focus on 7 key regions important for the future of global publishing. For each, Volland says you will “learn the most important market data, get to know the innovation drivers, and get to meet 7×7 companies that who can be your potential business partners.”

When asked why not focus solely on technology as CONTEC and Tools of Change Frankfurt have in the past, Volland responded, “because digital is an integral part of publishing! No need for fancy extra conferences any more.”

Through discussion with experts all around the world, these markets were selected:

  • China, International Partnerships and Joint Ventures
  • Germany, Scientific and Business Information
  • Indonesia, Trade Publishing
  • Mexico, Trade Publishing
  • South Korea, Education and Children’s Books
  • Turkey, Whole Publishing Market
  • US, Digital Publishing and Innovation

The conference schedule is laid out with different segments — analysis, visionary, and player — for each market so attendees can “schedule [their day] according to their interests” and “to enable [development of] a maximum of valuable contacts for each participant,” said Volland. Because relationships are better forged in person, the goal is to create as much face-to-face interaction between attendees and those men and women who can be integral for helping expand their business into these markets.
