Today’s lead story by Jennifer Belle discusses her very unique promotion for her novel The Seven Year Bitch, in which she paid women to read and laugh at her book throughout New York City. We think it was pretty extraordinary, and it got the job done. She earned press coverage in the New York Times and on author blogs across the Internet.
We’ve written before about the creativity with which authors approach their own book publicity (here and here). What is the best out-of-the-box book promotion you’ve heard of?

The best one I’ve heard of is one concocted by Kathy L. Patrick, the Pulpwood Queen founder. She issued a challenge on Facebook, saying that if she sold 1,000 copies of MY ORANGE DUFFEL BAG, she would color her hair orange. The authors, Sam Bracken and Echo Garrett, did the same. And the orders flooded in. Orders flooded her Beauty and the Book store in Jefferson, Texas, and we all had so much fun watching Kathy’s hair gradually turn orange as she posted photos on facebook. Truly ingenious.
Love reading the book. I am on my second toime and I don’t even like reading much.
Nice post! Book promotion is of utmost importance. Many successful titles in the market are not necessarily the best ones, however, it is their marketing efforts that count a lot. It’s true, writers & publishers need to come up with some innovative ideas to promote their books in this era of publishing war. Thanks!

You should post this original campaign:
“In order to promote the book “O Portão do Corvo” by the publisher Gailivro (Portugal), a newspaper boy dressed in old fashioned clothes shouted “Extra!Extra!” highlighting the series of murders mentioned in the book. This street campaign happened during 4 days in Lisbon and Oporto.”
