I think the ideas here are great for the non-fiction realm of book publishing but as we begin to explore the new features for the fictional worlds that authors create, and I am not referring here to some vook idea, but rather to the idea that the form of writing a novel, of writing short fiction is going to change. We at Sullivan Street Press are already beginning to do just that--to develop some new fiction titles that can take advantage of say, the technology found in games and place that within the context of a story.
As an aside regarding e-book culture. I went to an Apple store and tried to understand what at this moment the iPad had to offer a small publisher like us and it turns out they have nothing to offer and no interest in contacting us either.
We will all have to wait until they have dug down into the real opportunities that await all of us who want to expand what an e-book can be. Life is short and I hope Apple realizes if they don't capture the new ideas, another company will. It is more than just about fancy new gadgets but actually having something truly unique to offer.
